Massage therapy involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body. Throughout human history, massage has been used as a tool to help people relieve pain and relax. Gateway Healing Center offers a variety of massage therapies to suit the needs of any client who comes to see us.

Massage therapy at Gateway Healing Center is one of our most popular services. We work with individuals who experience chronic pain, who find themselves stiff after a weekend bike ride, the student-athletes, the pregnant moms and more. We are sure we can help you find whole body wellness with massage therapy at Gateway.

Relaxation and less pain often leads to better sleep, more energy and more productivity in one’s life. When people feel better in their bodies, they tend to do better in the world.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage focuses on your specific treatment goals. With this type of massage, the massage therapist uses their unique healing style to help meet your goals. They may use a combination of styles including Swedish massage, trigger point work, cupping, stretching and other helpful techniques for medical and orthopedic issues.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses lubrication to provide long, sweeping strokes, along with kneading, vibration, percussion, and passive joint movement techniques. Swedish massage is ideal for relaxation, healing sore muscles, and relief of joint pain. This form of massage is the basis of many other forms of massage, including deep tissue massage, sports massage, and prenatal massage.

 Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is as it sounds, there is firmer pressure applied throughout the duration of the massage. Someone may just prefer this type of pressure or they may have extra stiffness that requires a firmer touch. Your needs can be discussed with your practitioner prior to the beginning of your massage.

 Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is similar to Swedish massage in terms of technique and style, with an emphasis on the comfort and well being of the mom. Positioning, support, and comfort are the main focuses for the duration of the massage. The massage therapist will help the mom relax and take some of the pressure off of her growing body. Prenatal massage therapists are trained to properly care for the abdomen if that is an area the mom would like to focus on. However, as with all massages, the client decides which parts of their body they want to focus on, and which they want left alone.

What To Expect From Your Massage at Gateway Healing Center

We recommend that prior to your massage appointment you have showered at some point during the day, for your comfort and cleanliness. We suggest that you limit your caffeine intake so you can fully relax during your appointment. We encourage clients to drink plenty of water beforehand and afterwards to prevent cramping. Your massage therapist will go over your needs and goals with you prior to the appointment. Please make sure you tell your massage therapist about any allergies or sensitivities prior to the beginning of your massage.

Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your appointment to fill out necessary paperwork and discuss your treatment with your massage therapist. Please note if there are certain parts of your body that you want to focus on or avoid during your massage. Use this time to use the restroom and have a sip of water.

  • You will be walked to your private massage room, the therapist will leave and give you time to undress to your comfort level* and slip under the sheet on the massage table. Depending on the type of massage, your therapist will direct you to lay face up or face down when you get on the massage table.
  • Your massage therapist will begin the massage, using a hypoallergenic massage oil.** You are encouraged to close your eyes and relax. If at any point during your massage you would like to change the pressure, avoid an area, or focus on an area, do not hesitate to let your massage therapist know.

*If you would prefer to remain clothed during your massage, please let us know as this can be easily accommodated.

**If you have any allergies or would prefer to bring your own massage oil, please speak to us prior to the day of your massage.

After your massage is complete and you are once again fully clothed, you will be offered some water, and your massage therapist will likely chat with you about your experience and any concerns or suggestions they may have for you to maintain wellness throughout your body.
